My Cunning Plan is Working

Today was a big first—I finally managed to lure goldfinches to our backyard bird sanctuary!  This will seem humdrum and routine to anyone else in the country, but this troubled corner of Fairborn has been devoid of most wildlife, especially finches and other songbirds, since I got here two years ago.  With patience and providing a bird habitat, I’ve succeeded!

I wasn’t able to photograph the shy finches, but an opportunistic squirrel who was busy stuffing his face obliged me by sitting for his portrait.  And of course the flowers are thriving in the sauna-like conditions, better than we are.

Taking the Heat

Here’s how we while away an extreme heat wave—me watering flowers and E baking a new bread.  This one was based on an ancient Egyptian yeasted semi-raised flatbread with very basic ingredients, which tastes like butter melting in your mouth.  Then she made her weekly rendition of challah.  She has a serious primal bread thing going on.  And this in a tiny second floor apartment with a microscopic kitchen.  Hooray for AC!  Just practicing for TN, where we hope to have a little more space to spread out and get busy.
